Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder. It is a condition of the joint that worsens with time. Osteoarthritis involves the entire joint including the nearby muscles, underlying bone, ligaments, joint lining (synovium), and the joint cover (capsule).

Causes of Osteoarthritis

People with diabetes may be prone to osteoarthritis. In osteoarthritis, there is wearing down of the cartilage, a substance that helps to cushion the ends of bones in your joint. This deterioration of the smooth surface of the cartilage may be due to a combination of factors such as being overweight, joint trauma or injury, muscle weakness, family history and age.

Over time, there will be complete loss of the cartilage causing both ends of the bones to rub with each other. This result in bone damage and, eventually, deformity.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Symptoms may include joint pain, tenderness, stiffness, locking, and sometimes an effusion. Pain and stiffness in the joints are the most common symptoms. The pain is often worse after exercise and when placing weight or pressure on the joint. During the day, the pain may get worse with activity and feel better when you are resting. After a while, the pain may be present when you're resting. It may even wake you up at night.

Treatment of Osteoarthritis

The overall goal of treatment is early elimination of risk factors, early diagnosis and surveillance of the disease, and appropriate treatment of pain. Lifestyle modification (such as weight loss and exercise) and analgesics are the mainstay of treatment. Physical therapy has been shown to significantly improve function, decrease pain, and delay need for surgical intervention in advanced cases.
